For folks returning home from prison, the journey can be a winding road

This visual EP takes viewers on a journey with a formerly incarcerated recording artist, filmmaker and abolitionist, in search of a greater understanding between system impacted and “free” people.

JJ ‘88 is a musician, producer, and vocalist who uses music and film to heal and transform. He is also a prison abolitionist who, during his Represent Justice Ambassadorship, wrote and co-produced Songs from the Hole, a visual album-documentary that centers his story through song.

About the Issue

Lost In Freedom captures the vulnerability and isolation that many formerly incarcerated individuals experience upon reentry. The film addresses the concept of Post Incarceration Syndrome (PICS)—a set of symptoms resulting from the trauma of incarceration—though not officially recognized by The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It highlights the feelings of disconnection from both “the free world” and the prison environment, emphasizing the need for tailored mental health support for those reintegrating into society.

40%

of the 600,000 people released annually are estimated to have PICS.
