About Niya

Niya Kenny is a passionate advocate for social justice and education reform. As a former student at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC, she gained national attention when she witnessed and filmed the “Assault at Spring Valley.” This experience led to her arrest on charges of disturbing the peace and ultimately prompted her to withdraw from high school to pursue her GED.

Determined to make a difference, Niya joined other South Carolina students in a landmark lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state's law against disturbing schools, highlighting its disproportionate impact on Black students.

Previously, she interned with the African American Policy Forum, collaborating with renowned scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw to raise awareness about the school-to-prison pipeline and its effects on all students, particularly Black girls. Niya also worked as a youth mentor on EveryBlackGirl's team, participating in their field trips and supporting young girls in their journeys.

Now residing in Atlanta, GA, Niya is focused on her next chapter as she trains to become a Youth Life Coach. She aims to create transformative workshops for retreats and conferences, empowering young people to navigate their challenges and realize their potential.
